Rafting.
Having won the Wetherby District Raft Race many times in the last decade, including winning the Senior Race continuously for the last 12 years, we regard ourselves as the power team.
Anyone interested in a Rafting Challenge should contact us. The Raft must be constructed only with wood (ideally pioneering poles), rope and string, and bouyancy provided by plastic or steel barrels, or inner tubes. The raft to be paddled by four scouts with one passenger.
Raft construction tips :
- Make sure you have enough bouyancy to keep all paddlers clear of the water.
- The raft must be big enough for the paddlers to sit on comfortably.
- Add cross-poles to the design to enable the paddlers to get a good seat and foot grip on the raft.
- Choose bouyancy such that it does not present a large flat surface towards the front of the raft. This will inhibit high speed.
- Have as smooth as possible underwater design. Fits the barrels together to keep their combined surface smooth.
- Practice, particularly turning, because this needs good team coordination.
- It is better to have a rectangular raft rather than a square one.
